About the speaker

Mr Alex Torrie
Consultant Spinal Surgeon GHNHSFT

Mr Torrie studied Medicine at the University of Bristol and qualified in 2004, after which he gained an anatomy prosectorship from the University of Oxford. He completed his Orthopaedic higher surgical training in the Severn Deanery, before completing a complex cervical spinal fellowship. He started his NHS consultant post in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2017.

Mr Torrie is trained and competent in assessing and managing all adult spinal conditions. He works in close partnership with multiple professionals to ensure patients are comprehensively managed. He recognises the importance of delivering bespoke tailored spinal care to each and every patient. He is fully committed to improving patient outcomes and their quality of life, which is objectively monitored (only with patient consent) through the British Spinal Registry.

Mr Torrie has over 1600 patient pathways registered with the British Spine Registry. Patients under his care at their 1-year follow-up post treatment have achieved the 97.5 percentile for improvement in their quality-of-life scores from baseline (compared with all other UK spinal surgeons using this mandatory registry).

Recognising the importance of understanding and practicing evidence-based medicine, Mr Torrie has also completed a doctorate in Anatomical Sciences looking at the causes of adult/degenerative scoliosis and has published widely in multiple peer reviewed journals (full list of publications available – www.gloucestershirespinalsurgery.com). He also acts as a reviewer for the European Spine Journal and the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons.


Mr Torrie performs spinal operations, inclusive of the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine in both the trauma and elective settings. His surgical practice includes the management of routine and complex spinal conditions including, spine trauma and reconstruction, sports injuries affecting the spine, degenerative spinal disorders, back pain, lumbar disc prolapse, low back pain with sciatica, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, cervical disc prolapse with neck and arm pain, myelopathy, secondary spinal tumours affecting bone, spinal cord compression and spinal instability, spine infections and adult degenerative deformity with regional spinal imbalance.



Personal interests
Mr Torrie has always had a keen sporting interest, rowing for Great Britain as a junior and winning the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley Regatta. He now regularly cycles and lap swims 4-5X per week to keep fit.

Mr Peter is a specialist upper limb surgeon who has been trained in internationally renowned surgical centres in the UK and Australia with an exclusive interest in hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery. He is an expert in conservative and surgical management of problems affecting the upper limb.
