The GGPET Committee have planned this session with Mr Oliver Old and colleagues in the Specialist Weight Management Service.

0945-1015 Mohgah – Obesity as a disease, aetiology, obesity-related comorbidities, medical management of obesity
1015-1045 Andrei Ilczyszyn – overview of types of surgery, post-op issues, long term issues in primary care (including fertility/pregnancy)
1045-1115 Break
1115-1145 Jen Credicott – nutrition and obesity, healthy eating after bariatric surgery, realistic expectations after bariatric surgery
1145-1215 Oli Old – overview of specialist weight management service, who to refer and when
1215-1230 Questions to the team.

About the speaker

Mr Oliver Old

Mr Old graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Birmingham, and holds a degree in Neuroscience. He completed his surgical training in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, including specialist Fellowships at internationally renowned centres in Melbourne and Auckland, covering all aspects of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Bariatric (weight loss) surgery.

Mr Old has published papers on gallstone disease, hernias, Barrett’s oesophagus, oesophageal and gastric cancers, and weight loss surgery.

He was awarded a Research Fellowship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England to study Barrett’s oesophagus and received a research doctorate (Doctor of Medicine) from the University of Exeter for this work. This specialist interest has continued, and he is Chief Investigator on a large, international randomised trial in this field (Barrett’s Oesophagus Surveillance Study, BOSS).

Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family in the Cotswolds. To support his interests in the treatment of obesity, he has also qualified as a Personal Trainer, to help provide informed diet and exercise advice to his patients. He enjoys keeping fit himself through cardiovascular and resistance training – practice what you preach!

About the speaker

Dr Mohgah Elsheikh

I am a consultant Endocrinologist with a clinical practice that includes all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology.

My particular areas of expertise are in the management of obesity, type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome.

I trained at Kings College Hospital in London and the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. My first consultant post in 2001 was at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Here, I established the multidisciplinary obesity and bariatric surgery service and expanded it to become a regional referral centre. I also developed the one-stop clinic for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and led numerous innovative initiatives such as the development of the virtual thyroid clinic and the endocrine e-book.

In 2012 I moved to take a position at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi as a Consultant Endocrinologist.

I have authored several papers and textbook chapters including in the Oxford Handbook for Diabetes and Endocrinology. I am also a published author of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (The Facts).

I am co-organiser of several teaching programmes and regularly present at both national and international conferences.

I was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2003 and SCOPE certified by the World Obesity Federation in 2020.

Jennifer Credicott
Specialist Dietician in SWMS GHNHSFT

Jen graduated in 2013 with a First Class BSc Hons in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Cardiff Metropolitan University. That same year, she moved to Brussels and worked as a freelance dietitian before moving back to make her home in the Cotswolds in 2016.

Currently, Jen works part time for the NHS as a Specialist Weight Management Dietitian, covering behaviour change and bariatric surgery. She also runs her own private consultancy supporting people with a wide range of nutrition related queries and conditions.

About the speaker

Mr Andrei Ilczyszyn
Consultant Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon GHNHSFT

Mr Ilczyszyn qualified in medicine from St Georges Hospital Medical School, London and completed senior surgical training in the North East Thames Deanery, London.

He undertook a two-year surgical fellowship at the University College London Hospital Centre for Obesity Surgery and Weight Loss Management. He also holds a research degree in oesophageal physiology and oesophageal benign disease from Kings College London.

Mr Ilczyszyn’s focus is on the honest, open and holistic management of people with both obesity and benign surgical conditions.
